The Leaning Tower of Pisa

It is a cathedral bell tower in the Italian city of Pisa, built in the Field of Miracles.
Let's get acquainted with the Leaning Tower of Pisa from a structural point of view:
Its construction began in 1173 AD and they began to establish the bases and then the walls, and after the building reached the third floor, it was noticed that there was a slope.
Can you imagine that a tower weighing 14,500 tons is built on foundations 3 m deep and installed on sand and silt?!!
After discovering the slope, the engineers built the rest of the floors (external walls) so that the height of the floor in the inclined direction is greater than its height in the other direction.
Which increased the inclination of the tower due to the sinking of the foundations in a greater proportion in the soil, due to the increase in the weight of the floors.
Among the reasons why the tower did not collapse:
The construction continued for 199 years, and the construction halt in it for a long time is one of the reasons that allowed the soil to compact, which reduced the rate of inclination, and thus the tower did not collapse completely.
The clay soil helped and the main reason for the tower's tendency not to collapse and its resilience in front of 4 earthquakes.
The engineers calculated the center of gravity of the tower, and it was concluded from the calculations that the tower collapsed completely upon reaching a slope of 5.44 degrees. The tower was closed in 1990 at a tilt of 5.5 degrees, yet the tower did not collapse.
Attempts made to stop the tilt of the tower and not collapse:
Digging deep holes in the ground at a depth of 40 m, and installing the tower with iron cables through the holes. Liquid nitrogen was pumped, which led to the freezing of water in the soil and its expansion and contraction again, which led to the subsidence of the soil and the subsidence of the foundations, and consequently the slope of the tower at the rate of its inclination throughout these years.
They dug 361 holes and injected the soil with 90 tons of cement, which led to the tower's tilt strongly.
And finally, Soil Extraction was used in 1990:
The soil was removed from the non-slanted side so that the tower tilts in that direction, then iron cables were used to fix the tower bases in the ground and the slope was reduced to 4 bikes, and this was what it was at the beginning.
The engineers could have made it vertical, but they didn't want to lose its fame and tourist value because of its tilt.
And after that was completed, the tower was opened.
And it was confirmed that the tower could endure without any collapse for 300 years.

Guru Nanak's visit to Baghdad

The Gurdwara was founded by Mohammad Pasha Amoot follower of Peer Bakol at the time of visit of Guru Nanak's(1469 – 1539) visit to Baghdad in year 927 AH(1520-1 AD) where Guru Nanak Dev had arrived on way back from Mecca and Madina.

Note: The gunmbud like dome on the sharine.

It was built by a Sikh from Sikh regiment, during the World War-I that was stationed there for shikh, as their Gurdwara (worship place).

Later on it was related to the tale of Mohammad Pasha Amoot follower of Peer Bakol Lodhi.

To strengthen the it an inscription as:

ਬਾਬਾ ਗਿਆ ਬਗਦਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਜਾਇ ਕੀਆ ਅਸਥਾਨਾ॥
ਇਕ ਬਾਬਾ ਅਕਾਲ ਰੂਪ ਦੂਜਾ ਰਬਾਬੀ ਮਰਦਾਨਾ॥

Baba went to Baghdad and stayed outside the city , Firstly, Baba himself was in Timeless form and
Secondly, he had his companion Mardana, the rebeck player Bhai Gurdaas Ji’s Vaars,

The Gurdwara was founded by Mohammad Pasha Amoot follower of Peer Bakol at the time of visit of Guru Nanak's visit to Baghdad in year 927 AH(1520-1 AD) where Guru Nanak Dev had arrived on way back from Mecca and Madina.

It is said that  Guru Nanak Dev stayed outside the city of the west of Dajala (Tigris) River, about two kilometers north of Baghdad West railway station. He held discourses with Sajjadanashins (caretaker of mausoleum) of the mausoleums of Abdul Qadir gilani and Bahlol the Wise, who were greatly impressed by his views on God and religion.
After the Guru's departure, they raised a memorial in the form of a platform where the Guru had sat and discoursed. After some time when a room was constructed over the platform, a stone slab with the following inscription in Turki was installed in it: Lo ! the Great God hath fulfilled the wish.
A new building for Baba Nanak Darvesh has been constructed. Seven holy men extended their help in the construction. Its date as reckoned comes to 927. The lucky disciple caused a new current of water from the earth. The last sentence is the customary phrase to work out the date according to alphabetical key. The date is 927 A.H. which correspond to A.D. 1520.
This inscription was first noticed by "Swami Ananda charya" who mentioned it in his book "Snow Birds".
Sikh soldiers who went to Iraq during the First World War, 1914-18, raised a Gurdwara here, but now only the room exists which is visited by Sikh and non-Sikh Punjabis who have gone to the oil-rich Iraq as workmen during decades. However, as it is located within the graveyard, visitors are banned from staying overnight, cooking meals, holding Langar and Kirtan in view of the sensitivities of the majority of Muslim community.
After having travelled to Madina, Guru Nanak Dev ji soon arrived in Baghdad and took up a position, along with Mardana, outside the city.
Guru Nanak Dev ji shouted the call to prayer, on which the whole population became wrapt in silent astonishment – the Guru omitted the usual words Muhammad ar Rasul Allah, and substituted Arabic words of a similar sound to express his own ideas, hence the astonishment.
The pir (saint) of Baghdad, Bahlol Dana on meeting face to face with the enthusiastic stranger, inquired who he was and to what sect he belonged. The Guru greeted him with his customary ‘Sat Kartar’ and replied,
“I have appeared in this age to indicate the way unto men. I reject all sects, and only know one God, whom I recognise in the earth, the heavens, and in all directions.”
Upon this the Guru began to repeat the Japji.
As the pir listened to his doctrines he said,
“This is a very impious fakir. He is working miracles here, and informing us, contrary to the authority of our Holy Quran, that there are hundreds of nether and upper regions, and that at last men grow weary of searching for them.”
There are nether worlds beneath nether worlds, and hundreds of thousands of heavenly worlds above. The Vedas say that you can search and search for them all, until you grow weary. The scriptures say that there are 18,000 worlds, but in reality, there is only One Universe. If you try to write an account of this, you will surely finish yourself before you finish writing it. O Nanak, call Him Great! He Himself knows Himself. ||22||
The pir then called upon the Guru to give a manifestation of his power. Upon this, it is said, the Guru laid his hand on the high priest’s son and showed him the upper and lower regions described in the Japji.
Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, on the bank of the river Dajala, visited by Guru Nanak Sahib and Bhai Mardana, during their visit to Mecca, in 1519-20. Here, Guru Sahib had a discourse with Bhai Behlol Dana and Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (or their successors). A Gurdwara, about two km from railway station Baghdad, preserves the memory of the visit of Guru Sahib. A stone with inscription in Turkish, mentioning the visit of Guru Sahib refers that the water in that area was not worth drinking before the visit of Guru Nanak Sahib
Address: Near Baghdad West Railway Station (on Baghdad-Samarra rail line), Baghdad (Iraq)
A monument built by the successors and followers of a Muslim Sage Abdul Kadir better known as Pir Dastgir (1078-1166 AD) and Behlol stands one and a half miles east of railway station in Baghdad. The translation of the Arabic inscription on a slab on the wall behind the monument, where Guru Nanak had discourse with the Muslim sage Behlol, reads some-what like this-
"In Guru, that is the divine sage Baba Nanak Fakir's commemoration, this monument has been rebuilt. The holy sage bestowed the spring of divine benediction in 927 Hijri, 1520/1 AD".

The caption on the painting reads as below:
"Guru Nanak Dev. Ji's original painting."
The painting is stated to have been made by Kamal-ud-din Behzad (1450-1535) of Tabriz, in Baghdad, IRAQ when he was returning from Haz on his way to Tabriz and accompanying Jiwan Qazi. Almighty Satguru Nanak Sahib was in Baghdad from November 1519 to January 1520. Jiwan Qazi of Uch Multan Division, brought it to Multan in 1521 AD.

Satguru Nanak Sahib in Asthrakhan ( Russia)
The real story goes like this. Japu vanshi of Multan went to Russia in early part of sixteenth century. Both Satguru Nanak Sahib and Bhai Sahib Mardana Ji went to third Oddessey ( Udhasi) in the north of the world in 1516-17.
They visited Asthrakhan and stayed at the house of Japu Vanshi, a trader from Sukkur, Sindh ( Ref. Varan Bhai Gurdas, Var 11, Pauri 14), where Bhai Sahib writes---"Bhagat Jo Bhagata Ohri Japu Vanshi Sev Kamave--". At Astrakhan Satguru addressed the traders to do "Nek Kirat" (Fair trade) . Satguru spend some days with Japu-Vanshi and made him the Preacher of China, Korea and Japan etc.
They left for Nanking and Shanghai (China), North Korea and Kobe ( Japan).
In 1556 the Astrakhan was won by Russia. in 1556, the English traveller, A. Jenkinson went to Asthrakhan, who confirmed the Mangole trader, Iranian traders etc. Another traveller, S. Herberstein was of the different opinions. He ( S. Herberstein) Wrote"---the importance of Asthrakhan about 1520s, stating that ' Asthrakhan is a wealthy city, and the great emporium( Traders House) of the Tarters, which give its name to all surrounding country-----, being heirs of merchants, craftsmen, fishermen and farmers---"( Ref. PP No. 207 of " Islam in Russia").
In 1625 an Indian Serai was built in 1625, and an Indian Square was built by local govt. in 1649.There were traders in Moscow and Volga region of Russia even before 1580 ( Ref. " The Merchant of Moscovy 1580-1650).
The Russian census in 1556 confirms some Indian traders in the south of Russia.
Asthra Khan is in the south region of Russia and Volga river. in 1469 a Russian traveller, Afanasij Nikitin, reached India. He was a trader too. From 1469, the Indo- Russian trade started ( Ref. " Indian Dispora in Central Asia and its Trade, 1550-1900").

The First Meeting of Babur And Satguru Nanak in Khurasan.

This is actually the first meeting of Zahiru-din-Mohammed Babur and the Prince Humanyun at the Ismail Mosque in Bukhara(Khurasan).
Humanyun was about 14 years old at that time. Babur and the others came to the Mosque to read the Namaz in the evening in the month of Ramzan of 1520.
In that year the Month of Ramzan began in the middle of September and the Idul-Fitter was in the middle of October,1520 A.D.Note:First Ranzan 927 was on 20 December 1520 and First Shawwal was on 19 Jan 1521 - (Mohajirzada)

Babur mentioned that he is said to be a Marad(Purakh) who takes wine, bhang and other intoxicants. But fearless Satguru made the defintion of "Marad" and uttered the two Saloks of Mardana -I here. This definition of "Marad" is again clarified by the fifth Nanak, Satguru Arjan Sahib as----"Soi Marad Marad Mardana ----" Holy Page 1084 of SGGS.

In these Holy Saloks ther Satguru clarifies that in this Kaliyug(Dark Age) the wine is being given the wrong ones. This painting is taken as a courtesy from"The Guru'S Word & Illustrated Sikh History by Dr. Santokh Singh, published by Spiritual awakening Studies,Princton, Ontario, Canada,2000.

During the Second World war the Indian Army expanded to over two million troops, 300,000 of whom were Sikhs. This was probably the largest volunteer army in history. Indian troops served in Western Europe, East and North Africa, the Middle East, Italy and the Far East. They played a decisive role in winning the war.

The Sikh guard statues are a fine example of this, where the once living, then impressed with the diligence, loyalty and bravery of the Sikh guards brought in by the British colonial masters then to provide security, decided that they would also be adequate guardians of their final resting when they pass on.

The Sikhs were first brought into Singapore by the British as soldiers. When the British left Singapore for good, these Sikh soldiers then became bodyguards for wealthy Chinese merchants due to their big built and loyalty. In fact, the Chinese were so impressed with their bravery and loyalty that when someone from a wealthy Chinese family died in those days, a pair of statues of Sikh soldiers used to be erected on both sides of their tombs. This meant that even in death, the Sikhs were guarding them.'

THE UNTOLD EVENTS OF OUR HISTORY

THE UNTOLD EVENTS OF OUR HISTORY

Forwarded as received ~ Courtesy Fianan Idrees.

Subject: Two Presidents , 07 PMs, & Three Generals.

Paris was like a femme fatale. Ambassador Jamshed Marker loved Some interesting part of our history unfolded being in the company of artists, writers, fashion designers and intellectuals. He counts conductor Zubin Mehta and actor Omar Sharif among his good friends. But one sad incident clearly stays in his memory of those bucolic days; the untimely death of Shahnawaz Bhutto.

Marker sketches the details of the tragedy as though it happened yesterday.

Begum Nusrat Bhutto lived in Cannes, in the French Riviera. The lodgings were loaned to her by the then French minister of justice. The minister was a good friend of the Bhuttos as was President Gaddafi of Libya. Gaddafi had given large sums of money to the Bhuttos. One evening during dinner in a restaurant, the two boys — Murtaza and Shahnawaz — entered into an argument over the division of the money.

“Benazir tried to calm them down but she didn’t succeed,” remembers Marker. In the end she took her mother and sister back to their home, while Murtaza followed Shahnawaz to his flat.

The fight turned ugly. At some point the French police came to arrest the inmates. By that time Shahnawaz was unconscious. He had taken an overdose of drugs. The police could not arrest Murtaza because he had a Syrian diplomatic passport. Later that night the younger brother passed away. The police arrested his Afghan wife for “not coming to the aid of a dying man.” She hired a lawyer but the case was quashed by the bereaved family when she threatened to spill the beans.

“The whole affair was so sordid; so grim; so grisly,” says Marker who was given all the details by the head of the French intelligence police. But General Naseerullah Babar, who was later Benazir’s interior minister, claims that General Zia had a hand in the murder. He had sent a death squad to eliminate the younger son. Babar says Shahnawaz was poisoned, I ask Marker: “No, that’s not true at all. Zia had nothing to do with it.”

Ambassador Marker, 88, sits in his airy study at his Bath Island home, surrounded by photos of world leaders he has met. It’s like an interview with history as he unfolds chapter after chapter of world events in which he was a player dexterously mapping Pakistan’s course among the comity of nations.

Did a supernatural power guide him? I ask. He smiles. “As a fighter in the navy, I encountered danger and death. It made me strong. Life is all about determination, diligence and truth.

He is busy writing another book where he will name names. Unlike Quiet Diplomacy, which is a brilliant memoir of the ambassador, the next one tentatively called Outlook, will focus on the social, developmental and political corrosion in Pakistan over the years.

“Sycophancy is the single factor in our failure to progress,” he says. He remembers how one day he and his wife went to have lunch with Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan and Begum Raana. The host was missing. After a while he came in seething with rage. “Normally Liaquat didn’t lose his cool. But that day he fumed,” says Marker. “How dare these evacuee fellows present me with a number of properties saying that I can have them in lieu of my properties I have left behind in India ?” the prime minister told Marker. “I threw back the folder at them saying that they should never raise this subject again until they had provided shelter to each and every refugee living out in the open air all over Karachi .”

Marker says Liaquat Ali Khan was an honest man. “When he died he did not own a single house and had just Rs.4,000 in his bank account. Look at our leaders today… they are corrupt and surrounded by sycophants whose only job is flattery. It’s been the death of our value system. Few have the guts to speak the truth before the rulers.”

How come Marker is meant to be in the Guinness Book of Records as having been Ambassador to more countries than any other person if he was not a sycophant? “Well, I’m not sure if I’m in the Guinness Book, but all I can say is that I never jockeyed for a job. I really didn’t care and in fact each time the government changed I resigned.

Though he was a non-career diplomat, Marker holds the record of serving as ambassador of Pakistan continually for thirty years, in ten top capitals of the world. In each country, he left a mark. Embarrassed to talk about his own feats, Marker meanders through vignettes that add a touch of humour to them. “In Prime Minister Suhrawardy’s time the joke of the day was that the society ladies were divided into two categories: PPM (pinched by the prime minister and UNPPM (un-pinched by the prime minister)! But he was another very honest man. His only weakness was women.

“Zulfi would say that the only way Suhrawardy can be arrested is for molesting women!” Marker was a good friend of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who like Marker shared a love of cricket. “But when he became the PM, I stopped calling him Zulfi.” Marker remained a friend even when ZAB was out in the cold during the Ayub era. “I sent him a letter in the diplomatic bag. I’ve never told anyone but I even gave two lakh rupees to him when he formed the PPP. I could have lost my job, but I didn’t care!”

The rot according to Marker began with Ghulam Mohammad. The bureaucrats became very powerful and in collusion with Punjabi politicians like Gurmani and others ruined the system of governance. “People are like sheep led by wolves,” Marker quotes a friend. “

Pakistan after Liaquat has never been ruled by a genuinely elected leader.” says Marker. “Those who ruled were never true representatives of the people.”

He wanted to resign when Benazir Bhutto became the PM the second time. “She came to Washington on a state visit. In our private meetings where we discussed Pakistan ’s national interests, she always had her lobbyist Mark Segal and friend Peter Galbraith sit in. I was most unhappy about it. They had no business to be there.”

There are many more anecdotes that Marker shared with me. Hopefully they will find a place in his new book. History is about people in power and how they ruled. Who better to write about Pakistan than this great man who served “two presidents, seven prime ministers, three chiefs of army staff and many foreign ministers.”

Marker quotes Moeen Qureshi who was with Zia on the night Bhutto was hanged. “I stayed with Zia until 2 am in the morning. Zia was cool as a cat as we talked about everything under the sun.

The next morning I read that ZAB had been hanged!”
